Have you ever wondered how to keep that headband on your head?

Whether you're struggling with those one piece popular elastic rubber style headbands, fabric bands, plastic bands or even metal bands, sometimes they can be a challenge.

The truth of the matter is some people just may not be able to successfully wear headbands, regardless of the type of material, shape or thickness.

Skull Shape And Size Matters

Why?  Individual skull shape may be the great equalizer.

If you're skull is just not big enough at the back of your head, the rubber ones may not stay put on your head.

Metal hairbands which can be gently bent to create a custom fit may work for some types of heads which aren't normally compatible with elastic or other types of headbands.

Start By Selecting The Most Compatible Headband

One of the best ways to keep that headband on your head is to select the one that is most compatible.

Select a headband which is the best size, shape, thickness and material of headband which is compatible with your hair type, texture, condition, length and lifestyle.

One piece rubber or elastic headbands designed to keep hair off the face are unbroken circles. They are a popular choice.

Unfortunately they're not always easy to wear even though they resemble a giant rubber band.

Step By Step Rubber Headband Placement

Follow the steps below to place and secure a rubber headband:

1.  On completely dry, detangled hair, make sure your hair is prepped with a lot of hairspray to help anchor the rubber headband.

Note:  Be sure to look for elastic headbands which are flat on one side with flatness extending to the ends.  It's best to select an elastic band which is a little thinner on one side and more flat on the other.  Round headbands are more likely to roll up and off the head.

When possible find elastic/rubber/nylon or polyurethane headbands with silicone grips inside the headband or those with adjustable sliders in the back or on the sides.

2.  Pull the elastic headband down over the top of the head and below the chin.

3.  Use fingers and/or a brush to pull hair back up and off the face into a messy bun or ponytail positioned at the back of the head.

4.  Secure the bun and/or ponytail with an elastic band you can cut off after the headband is positioned on your head.

5.  Pull the elastic headband back up and over your hairline.

6.  Position the headband where you wish it to be located.  Make sure the band is flat all the way around.

7.  Push the headband forward just a little bit with your fingers to give it a slight traction against the top of the hair.

8.  It's likely the elastic headband may move slightly after it's been positioned.   Don't worry if this happens, it simply means the headband is settling and will eventually be anchored.

9.  If your headband still doesn't stay put, you might consider spraying the underside of the headband with hairspray before pulling it on over your head.

Once you have the headband positioned the way you desire, either leave the bun or ponytail in place or cut the elastic and allow hair to flow around the headband.

In most situations the elastic headband will stay anchored unless you whip your head around excessively.

You can always used bobby pins on the outside of the elastic band to anchor it into place, but this is not always desirable since the bobby pins will show.

Where To Position Your Elastic Headband

The most common positions for your headban

1.  Wear it right at the hairline to hold back an overgrown fringe.

2.  Position it 3 inches from the hairline for a classic school girl style or to frame a mid-head hair knot.

3.  Halfway between the hairline and the back of the head in traditional tiara-position.

4.  Wear it high off the nape of the neck to frame an updo.

If the headband has a metal connector, don't worry about where they are positioned. It's optional to let them show if your prefer.

Fabric Headbands

Fabric headbands may be much more difficult to wear for certain type, textures and length of hair.

The best way to wear a fabric headband is to first position a framework of bobby pins positioned in the shape of large X shapes.  The bobby pins will help to anchor the fabric headbands.

Position the X bobby pins with 2 behind each ear and 2 in the back middle of where the headband will rest.

Always be sure to position the X positioned bobby pins behind each ear.

Plastic U Shaped Headbands

Look for headbands which have teeth, have an elastic back strap or advertise they are ouch less.

A trick for helping plastic U shaped headbands stay put is to apply a little dab of hot glue on the underside of the headband, allow it to dry completely.

The hot glue forms a type of anchor to help keep smooth plastic headbands from sliding off.

If you really want to guarantee your headband will grip tightly, hot glue a metal comb on the underside of your favorite band.

Allow it to completely dry and you're good to go.
